What a fantastic and inspiring first DAY 1 of #DouglassWeek 2023!
We kicked #DouglassWeek off with a full slate of events: Our first event was a virtual tour and talk at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, this was moderated by Dr. Keidrick Roy from Hardvard University and featured insights from the guest curator Professor John Stauffer of Harvard University and the National Portrait Gallery Senior Curator of Photographs, Ann Shumard.
For the second event, we joined speakers Dr Ezra Greenspan, Dr Larry Powell, Dr Jack Kaufmann-McKivigan and Dr Sue Perdue when they took a look at the Frederick Douglass Papers Project as it celebrates its 50th anniversary, and we witnessed a discussion which focused on the project’s early years and current work on new print and digital editions.
At our third event, we listened to a talk about Frederick Douglass’ time in Ireland during the famine with Aisling Keavey, and, after that, in our fourth event, we hear more about Black freedom fighters and their activism in Britain and how they forever changed the landscape of Britain and Ireland from #DouglassWeek team member Dr Hannah-Rose Murray.
In the last event of Day 1 of #DouglassWeek2023, also hosted by Dr Hannah-Rose Murray, we learned more about her research into how visual performances were used to inspire change as well as how Black abolitionists relied on a close relationship between visual arts and print as part of their lecturing tours in Britain and Ireland during the 19th century.

On the 2nd Day of #DouglassWeek 2023, Tuesday, July 11th, in our first event of the day, we will see Dr Keidrick Roy again who will talk about Douglass’ philosophical insights during an event tracing some of the foundational social and political questions he contemplated in his adolescence. In our first in-person event in Rochester, we will join Douglass descendant Kenneth B. Morris Jr. and Hardy Brown who will hold presentations about Rochester as a stop on the Underground Railroad and the role that the Douglass family and the city of Rochester played in the fight against slavery.
Tuesday also includes one of our Douglass Dialogue events with the younger generation of descendants of Frederick and Anna Douglass. This promises to be a very inspiring conversation with Nicole Morris, Jenna Lynne Morris and Douglass Morris II, who share their experience and thoughts about being a direct descendant of the great abolitionist and explore the impact of that ancestry.
And, finally, Executive Director of Fulbright Ireland, Dr Dara Fitzgerald, and three Fulbright Frederick and Anna Douglass Award alumni will join us to discuss their research and scholarship and provide details on opportunities like the Fulbright-Frederick and Anna Douglass Award.
