#DouglassWeek is an annual event series celebrating and advancing the work of Frederick Douglass around the world. The series includes discussions, performances, exhibitions and events designed to promote collaboration and engagement and to highlight and further the influence of Douglass and other changemakers.
This year, #DouglassWeek takes place from the 14th-20th of April in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with events in Washington, DC, Rochester, NY, Cork, Ireland and online around the world.
Participants are able to join the festivities in person or through our YouTube channel throughout the week.

#DouglassWeek features in-person and virtual events, programs, conversations, workshops, gatherings and more. Led by a wide network of Douglass scholars, historians, and researchers, along with artists, heremusicians, poets, community groups and activists from around the world, #DouglassWeek activities consider the story of Douglass and other changemakers through historical, creative, academic, cultural and other lenses and apply them to contemporary topics to continue the fight against racism and inequality. Anyone and everyone! From curious children to wonderful community elders, there are events for everyone. The events span five different categories — educational, historical, creative, sports, and literary — and no matter your background, origin, age, status, life circumstances, ethnicity and identity, we are sure you will find #DouglassWeek inspiring, empowering and enriching!

Both! Our goal is to make every event accessible to as many people as possible. Some events are virtual for all and may be live or pre-recorded. Other events are in-person for those who can physically attend, and live-streamed and recorded for those who cannot. Our goal is to build connections within the local community and around the world.

The week is organized by The Globe Lane Initiative, a nonprofit organization inspired by Douglass that uses historical resources, cultural programming and community engagement to highlight Douglass’ enduring contributions and continue his intertwined struggle for freedom, equality, liberation and justice. Each year, Globe Lane works in partnership with a wide network of Douglass scholars, historians and researchers, along with artists, musicians, poets, community groups and activists from around the world to create #DouglassWeek. All of our participants respond to the story of Douglass and other changemakers through historical, creative, academic, cultural and other lenses to describe the influence of history on contemporary topics and conversations.

For most events you do not have to register, and you can just attend. However, there are a few ticketed events and workshops that require advance registration. These will be clearly marked on our website, in the PDF program, and in our social media posts.

Yes, definitely! During our closing event each year, we will announce the location and dates of next year’s #DouglassWeek. Each year, we travel to a different location where Frederick Douglass spoke, visited, lived, or was otherwise active and proactive. This allows us to shine a light on his many activities and travels, while also looking at the successes and challenges at each of those locations today.

Almost all of our events are free to attend. However, a few events require a small fee to allow us to pay the wonderful artists and other contributors who join us. We are grateful to our generous sponsors and donors who help us offer so much of #DouglassWeek at no cost, and we always welcome additional support.
